The Bits: May 26th Through May 31st

With many BIG things going on there aren't a ton of Bits like usual.  Shocking.  I know.
We love Thunderbird week!  Thank you, Air Force Academy, for having the best graduation ceremony in the country.

Tryouts!  It feels like the season just ended yesterday!  Oh wait...that's because it did.  Josh and Ben started up tryouts for the 2015/16 season the day after Zac's last make-up game for the 2014/15 season.  There really aren't breaks anymore!  Ben worked throughout his tryout days with his Copa '03 team and was selected to continue with them.  Woot!!  We are so glad all his hard work and determination to move up has been honored.  He will have a new coach, Coach Archie, whom Zac played for this last season, so we know a bit about his coaching style.  Ben is extremely excited about the season ahead, and especailly that he's healed enough from the concussion to play again!

At this month's pack meeting Josh was awarded his Arrow of Light!  So exciting!  And unexpected.  We didn't know it was happening so I wasn't even there to see it because I was still at Ben's soccer tryout.  His leaders accidentally jumped the gun a bit and gave the award to him before his last few items were completed, a couple of requirements for one of his required activity pins, plus his 3-mile hike.  But no WAY we are taking it away from him.  He's so proud!  No worries though, he's not getting a pass on these items.  He will do all required activities to complete the Arrow of Light at Cub Scout Day Camp this month so it will be 100% legit.  Way to go, Joshie!  You are one fantastic Scout!  And so darn cute!

So many intense storms this season!  They are most often in the late afternoon/early evening, but sometimes at night too, and a few in the morning...pretty much all the time.  It's been quite the sight to see!  Some nights we have just had to postpone bedtime so that Luke, Tom and I can curl up in the rocker and watch the storm blow its way through before it's moved on and they can finally sleep.

"Mom! These are funny pumpkins!"  Clearly we've been buying the small, seedless ones for too long....
It was Josh's turn for his first competitive tryout as a U11 player.  After much deliberation, he decided to go out as a full-time keeper, meaning he would devote himself to only goalkeeping, and no longer play out on the field.  This allowed him to be considered for the top two teams, Predator and Copa, in our club, one of the top clubs in the state, who require a dedicated keeper.  We knew that is what the coaches were hoping for, they had been watching him in goal and Josh is pretty good, even though he gets frustrated that he can't save them all.  We have to remind him that the goal is about five of his body lengths long and the top is higher than he can jump, so he's got to cut himself a little slack and just do his best.  He ended up being picked for the top team, Predators '05.  Wow!  To say he is THRILLED is an understatement.  And we are so proud...and in a little bit of shock considering that Josh just took up goalkeeping this year.  It is a huge honor, but he's up to the challenge!
I asked Zac to take a few pictures of his 8th grade party at Brunswick Zone on the last day of school, and this is the only one he took.  He's a male teenager, so I'll take it!  He had a ton of fun bowling, laser-tagging, hanging and celebrating the end of middle school with his classmates, two of which, Varun and Keshav, are in this blurry picture.  What a way to end the year!

The kids at AIES sure capture the heart!  There are definitely aspects of the job I am going to miss, like the chance to touch a young life for the better and make a little bit of a difference...no matter how small.
Early in the week, we heard the heartbreaking news that Adam's Aunt Chris had lost her 14-year-long battle with multiple types of cancer.  Adam's mom was able to be with Chris and her family in her final days, which was a gift to all of them.  Chris fought for years to give herself extra time with her family and to watch her darling grandchildren, with her in the photo above, grow and bloom.  She adored them!  We loved the visits she made with Nicolle down here to Colorado to visit us, as well as the times we shared with her before that.  She was a strong and beautiful warrior and a radiant soul, abundant in kindness and gentle in spirit.  Adam flew to Salt Lake to be with his family and share in remembering and honoring our Christiane Vandenwijngaert Blood.  She will be so missed and I am grateful he could be there to represent our Colorado clan and share our love with our family!
Back to five boys!  The last day of school was also the last day that Jake and Bryson spent at our house.  Our month as a 'family' of nine was over.  It actually flew by and went pretty smoothly, but I love being back to seven.  These guys are cream of the crop!

Now there's a car packed full of Conlin handsomeness!
Adam loved the time in Utah with his family, even if the reason he was there was not a happy one.

The photo text I received when Zac was babysitting...hahahaha!  Always good to know things are going well!
I was privileged to sub in Tommy's primary class on Sunday when his teachers called in absent at the last minute.  This is Tommy's drawing of the Holy Ghost.  Love it!
Every training we have, we get more excited to do this...and feel the weight of our assignment more and more!
