To Washington We Will Go: Happy Fourth

We arrived safely at Lake Roesiger and settled in easily.

Our Fourth of July was magical as always!  Quality time eating good food and watching the amazing fireworks display around the lake with our tribe is just the thing to soothe the soul.  One of the special things about this year was that it was the first time that all of the in-law parents were in attendance for the party: Skip and Janet Madsen, Stan and Candace McKenzie, Barb and Rick Franklin, Naomi Hales and Kelsey Rydalch and her girlfriend, Brandi.

It was another great Conlin Fourth!  Best day of the year!

Family photo shoots can get long for anyone.

Ryan brought a whole bag of snack items from China.  The only problem was that we didn't know what was in any of the containers because the labels were all in Chinese.  So the braver of us just dove and and gave it all a taste!

Luke surprised me the most by trying nearly everything.  Including the pickled chicken feet--which he really liked!  Woah.

The whole bunch of us!

Conlins, in-laws, grandkids, great-grandkids, grandpups,and all the in-laws parents!

To Washington We Will Go: On the Road

SO much to catch up on!  It's been a busy, wonderful summer!

First up, the annual Washington trip.

We set out on July 1st, shooting to arrive at Lake Roesiger for the Fourth.  Wyoming was lovely, which isn't my usual position on the vastness of the Wyoming drive, but there had been so much rain this summer already, including a storm we drove though ourselves, that everything was green and gorgeous.

We stopped in Evanston for the night and then drove on to catch up with the Richardsons in Meridian for a day.  We love these friends that feel like family, even though we see them, at the most, for just a day or two out of the year.  The kids picked their friendship right up and had a great time swimming and playing long into the summer evening.  They are all getting so grown up!  So old, in fact, that this year we had no problem leaving the crew with pizza while the four of us adults had a quick dinner out and a visit to the under-construction Meridian Temple at sunset.  Beautiful!

Next stop: Lake Roesiger (wait...can we stop for shakes at Miner's first?).

Aaron's Camp 2016

In June, Zac attended Aaron's Camp with the young men, age 14 and up, from our stake.  Adam, as our ward's Teachers' Quorum Advisor, was able to attend for a couple of days with the boys.  Zac loved every minute and would have liked for it to last much longer.  He wrote the sweetest letter home to his brothers and we saw his faith and character grow incredibly in the short time at camp. While Zac came home gushing with stories and experiences during the week following camp, fifteen-year-old boys don't like sitting to type essays about camp for their mother's blog, so Adam will sum up this incredible camp experience:

Aaron's camp is a faith based high-adventure camp designed to help these young men feel the spirit while being exposed to hard things.  It gives them the experience of accomplishing hard things while their peers provide encouragement and support.  It lasts for a full week and is a life-changing and character-defining event for many.  I was so lucky to be able to attend with our youth even if for only the first couple of days.  It was amazing to see the amount of growth and development that occurred and see how much the group was there to support and lift up one another when needed.

The spiritual aspect of the camp came through daily firesides and devotionals, memorized scriptures and songs, group and individual prayers, and the constant support and encouragement from friends and leaders.  The high-adventure ("hard things") came in the form of a high ropes course up in the trees, rappelling off a 60 foot cliff, an obstacle course (which claimed the honor of injuring the most participants, mostly leaders), an "amazing race," the Leap of Faith (where participants needed to climb a 30 foot tree stump and leap from the top, trusting that the ropes and harness would keep them safe), a grueling six-mile hike up a nearby peak, thundering hail storms (not planned) and more.

The biggest learning for me was how important it is for us to provide our youth with opportunities to experience hard things and learn how to overcome them.  It was very evident within our small group that everyone has boundaries (where things transition from comfortable to hard) of different sizes.  Some have boundaries so large that I have never seen them bump up against those boundaries.  Others hit those boundaries almost every day.  Everyone, no matter how large their comfort boundaries are, will hit the outer edges of those boundaries at some point during their life.  As mentioned earlier, it may happen every day for some while others may not hit their boundaries until they are adults.  How they respond once there is part of what defines them.  It is important for us as leaders and parents to help them learn how to overcome those challenges to where they can be successful in any situation.  That is my challenge.

The Bits: June 25th Through June 30th

June 2016 was awesome, one Bit at a time:

So far I've been pretty happy with the kids who my boys have chosen as friends.  They're all great kids.  For example, Ben's pals Micah and Will were happy to let Tommy and Dad play some hoops with them while they were hanging out last Saturday.

Date night with my favorite dork.

The Great Lukini entertains us with a Sunday night magic show!

I just love the amazing skies here!

I had a day of running around last week, but before I left, I showed the boys some cute crafts I saw on Pinterest.  While I was gone, they decided to do one of the projects all on their own.  So grateful for summer fun born of boredom!

Beautiful sunsets all summer long!

Some favorites from our photo scavenger hunt: your reflection somewhere unexpected; movement; something red; someone/thing looking unusually small; a group photo.  These guys are the BEST!  It's been a great summer so far!

We have a lot of fun, but work must be done.

It was scrumdiddlyumptious!  Summer movie season is so fun!
