The Bits: November 1st Through November 30th

November's Bits!
It was a great evening honoring some incredible student athletes, and really fantastic kids, at the RHS XC banquet.  We love this team!  We are so proud of Ben for everything he gave to the season, and I love that he was chosen for the Mindfulness Award.  He has really been working on the mental and soulful elements of running - and life - this year.  And we are also so proud of Zac for having fun and working hard while trying something new and outside of his comfort zone (even if halfway through the season Sudo Cyber and the Fall Play won out for his time.)  Great season, Running Rams!!  We are honored to be part of this running family.
Cute picture of the crew.

Happy Braces Removal Day, Josh!!

Marching Band Banquet Night for Josh.  It sure was a great season, Regiment!  Josh had the BEST time and learned a lot.  He always felt like a true part of this team, even though he was only an eighth grader.  Although, his award was "Best 9-Year-Old"....

Bravo to Tommy and the AIE third graders on their production of "Hats!"  Tommy's line as Daniel Boone:  "If you're on your way to the Cumberland Gap, you'll want to wear a coonskin cap."  What a fun program!

CO sunset 1.

Hooray for a return to checks and balances!  Hopefully common sense will prevail and not obstructionism.

Tommy had an awesome field trip to Cave of the Winds.

Luke at GameCon with Ethan and Gabe.  When I had littles, I read one of my favorite parenting books called "Bringing Up Geeks," and as I sit here listening to their excited, adorably geeky conversation, interacting with real human friends as they play "Magic: the Gathering", I know I'm succeeding.

CO sunset 2.

We celebrated the first snow in a LOOOOOONG time (and the snow day that followed) with some sledding!

Snowy walks with Mama.

Beautiful!

I think they finally wrapped up at 11:30pm.

Two sleepy boys after a 4:30am baptism session on White Friday for our region's youth at the Denver Temple.
Ben: "Did you find my surprise for you yet, Mom?"
Ice sculptures and caramel apples at the Shops at Briargate.

3D HP puzzle time!  Thanks, Auntie Lili!

Then we got puzzle addiction.
This is why I don't leave my sewing kit out.  The stuff of 80's horror films.

Zac was invited to be one of 3 students on a panel presenting and answering questions about the Cybersecurity and coding pathways for our school district.  He was articulate and awesome!

It's no secret that our sweet Luke deals with some unique challenges.  As he deals with ADHD, I've received enough emails over the years from teachers that weren't glowing.  So these kinds of emails mean so much to us.  And from a teacher in a class he's struggled with this year, too!  I'm so grateful she took the time to send it.  We recently decided to take him off his medication to see how he implements the many tools he's been equipped with for coping and focus, and while we've seen a few backslides in his organization and remembering, mostly it's been really positive - including this.  We ARE so proud of Luke and the gains he's made this year.
I just love our Thankful Tree.  It might just be up until next year, because I can't bear to take it down!

Ben at Nike Cross-Country Regionals 2018

The weekend before Thanksgiving, my friend and fellow runner mom, Dena Pizzamenti, and I loaded up our 2 cars and drove a crew of runners to the Nike Cross Country Southwest Region Race.  My cousin, Britt, had generously opened her home in Gilbert to our group of 12 runners, to sack out on every floor of her house, invade her kitchen and play in her pool.  We were joined by Coach Koziuk and Connor McCabe, one of Ben's friends, mentors and last year's seniors who is running for Arizona State now.  Everyone loved having him there!

It was a fun weekend of running, laughter, cross-country-weirdness and bonding that saw a lot of success for these kids, giving them optimism for next season.  Ben was the only RHS runner to qualify for the Championship Race, and although he didn't do as well as he was hoping, he PRed with a 15:48.4, finishing 64th in the U.S. Region that includes top runners from all school sizes in CO, NM, AZ, UT and NV.  I mean...64th in the region!!!  Jaw-dropping.

Adam and I are so proud of Ben and his gains this season!  We know this will fuel him to improve even more next year.  Dena and I had such a blast with these stellar kids.  What an impressive bunch!
